EMPOWHERMENT
FloydProject was founded by Debra K. Floyd. A lifelong advocate
of women’s interests, the veteran dancer, choreographer, &
instructor desired to create a new outlet to support & empower
women. With her extensive dance background & education in women's
spirituality & movement, she decided to form the contemporary dance
company in 2000, in the Washington, D.C. area.
Students from Debra’s dance classes were selected to become the
founding members of the company. In addition to choosing trained
dancers, it was also important that the dancers represent diverse walks
of life. As an established solo artist, she also decided to
incorporate her solo work with the ensemble and create one entity. The
company made their debut at a small community venue, Northminster
Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC.
Since FloydProject’s inception, they have diligently worked to nurture
Debra’s mission. In June 2004, the company produced the “Women’s Dance
Project” - a full-length production which incorporated women of various
ages, dance levels, and cultures. The purpose of the project was to
explore our differences through dance, music and spoken/signed w Debra
created her latest project in 2006, “Not Every Woman…What’s Your
Story”.
